Malia

Malia Crete beach coast

Malia is located on the northern coast of Crete, approximately 35 km east of Heraklion. The original village is situated about 1 km inland from the coast.

About 2 km northeast of the town center lies the small port and marina of Malia. Roughly 3 km outside the village are the ancient Palace of Malia and the Chrysolakkos necropolis.

The town mainly lives from tourism and offers several fine sandy beaches, along which numerous hotels are located. Along the main street leading to the sea, you will find many shops, souvenir stores, tavernas, cafés, bars, and clubs.

Along a coastline of about 6 km, from neighboring Stalis to the famous Potamos beach west of the archaeological site of Malia, the fine sandy beaches of the Malia area extend.

All beaches are well organized, offering full beach facilities as well as a wide range of water sports. The best-known beaches are in Stalis “Vagies”, the natural palm grove “Finikas” and “Psarolakos”, and in Malia “Klontzani”, “Pyrgos”, and “Potamos”.

The easternmost and most beautiful beach is Potamos (meaning “river”), named after the small stream that flows next to the Malia wetland. Potamos is a beautiful sandy beach, about 4 km outside the village, well organized and usually less crowded than the main beach of Malia.
