Dodecanese Islands

The Dodecanese is a group of islands in the southeastern Aegean Sea, off the coast of Asia Minor. The Dodecanese gets its name from the Greek word „Dodekanissa“ (12 islands), a meaning that traces back through the region's eventful history.

Today, the Dodecanese consists of 27 larger and smaller inhabited islands and about 150 small uninhabited ones. The most important and well-known island is Rhodes, which has been the main economic and cultural center as well as the administrative seat of the region for millennia. Kos and Patmos are also of special historical significance.

Together with the following nine larger islands:

  • Astypalea
  • Kalymnos
  • Karpathos
  • Kasos
  • Leros
  • Nisyros
  • Symi
  • Tilos
  • Kastellorizo

they form the 12 main islands of the Dodecanese. In addition to these twelve, three more inhabited islands are included: Agathonisi, Lipsi, and Chalki, making a total of fifteen principal islands.

Other smaller inhabited islands of the Dodecanese include:

  • Alimia
  • Arkoi
  • Farmakonisi
  • Giali
  • Kinaros
  • Levitha
  • Marathos
