Discover Corfu

Corfu landscape and coastline

Corfu is the northernmost and second-largest of the Ionian Islands, with a coastline of around 200 kilometres. Promontories and picturesque bays alternate along the coast. The island is characterised by hilly terrain, intersected by valleys and flat plains. In the north, Corfu becomes mountainous – here lies Mount Pantokrator (916 m), the highest peak of the island.

The landscape is defined by densely wooded hills, ancient olive groves, cypress forests, and numerous sandy beaches. The island takes its name from the two rock peaks (“Korifes”) that are visible when approaching by sea. The capital Corfu Town (Kerkyra) reflects the island’s rich history, influenced by Venetian, French, and British rule.

The old town with its narrow alleyways, the Esplanade Square, and the Old Fortress (Fortezza Vecchia) are reminders of the Venetian era. The large cricket field dates back to the British period.
