Pieria – Olympic Riviera

Olympic Riviera Pieria

This beautiful region of Pieria, known as the Olympic Riviera, stretches along approximately 70 km of coastline featuring wide sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, tourist-developed resorts, and mountains rich in history and natural beauty. Picturesque, protected settlements cling to the slopes and foothills of the mighty Mount Olympus, while ancient sites, Byzantine monuments, and the imposing Olympus create a spectacular backdrop.

Poets and artists have continuously praised Mount Olympus from Homeric times to the present day. Not only its height is impressive, reaching 2,918 meters at Mytikas, but also its dramatic rise directly from the sea. For mountaineers, Olympus is a privileged destination. Hiking associations have carefully developed trails and welcoming mountain huts.

The roads, paths, and trails crossing the massif also allow visitors without special mountaineering experience to explore the mountain, its rich flora and fauna, and its natural beauty. The easiest routes begin in Litochoro. The next stop after hiking the E4 trail through the Enipeas Gorge is Prionia at 1,100 meters altitude.

Dion, an important archaeological site and sacred city of the Macedonians dedicated to the god Zeus (Dias), lies at the foot of Mount Olympus. In the archaeological park and museum, visitors can view findings from the ancient city of Dion. Excavated city blocks, houses, workshops, shops, and public buildings provide insight into life in antiquity. In summer, the ancient theater comes alive again with performances and concerts as part of the Olympus Festival.

Litochoro is a historic small town with Macedonian-style houses, narrow cobbled streets, and many chapels. The year-round lively resort is located about 5 km from the coast and serves as a starting point for hikes into the Enipeas Gorge as well as ascents of Mount Olympus.
