Discover Methoni

The southern rocky cape has been an important anchorage since ancient and Byzantine times, thanks to its natural harbor. In the 15th century, Venetian conquerors built a magnificent defensive wall, which is still very well preserved today.

The port of Methoni served as a trading hub for goods from the Orient and Italy. The town developed significantly and became one of Greece’s commercial centers. Beautiful Venetian houses with balconies still shape the townscape today and reflect its former prosperity.

As early as the 13th century, the Venetians built a vast fortress on a rocky promontory, comparable in size to a small city. Due to the continuous succession of rulers—Venetians, Ottomans, Egyptians, and later the Franks—many historical traces have been preserved, including the moat, the Lion of St. Mark, the ancient monolithic column, the Turkish bath, the great hall building, and the church.

Modern Methoni is a small harbor town at the southwestern tip of Messenia, with around 2,500 inhabitants. A fine sandy beach lies between the castle and the town, which is set slightly back from the sea on a gentle hillside. The sunsets are a particularly memorable daily experience.
